The setting of Life of Pi and Slumdog Millionaire may seem very similar on the surface but the only real similarity is that the stories take place in India. Pi Patel lives in Pondicherry within a relatively wealthy community. The story unfolds during the mid 1970’s during a time of great turmoil. It is when the family decides to escape the “state of emergency” that their boat sinks and Pi is stranded on the lifeboat. Slumdog begins in the slums of India where Jamal has a very harsh upbringing. The story basically follows Jamal through his journey, his different jobs, his encounters with his brother and his never-ending search for his childhood love.
The main difference between the two stories settings is the hometowns or environments of the protagonists. Pi grew up with a good family with money, who had a fun childhood with experiences involving animals and school but Jamal had a rough and almost tragic childhood with the death of his mother, his time at the orphanage and his many years living on the streets.
